Undercover Investigations, Cybercrime, and Operation Carder Kaos

I recently had the pleasure of joining Ronnie on the Cybercast for an in-depth conversation about my career with the United States Secret Service, the evolution of organized cybercrime, and the investigations that inspired my book, Operation Carder Kaos.

Ronnie opens the episode with a story from an undercover operation in Dubai. After months of building trust with an international cybercriminal, a single comment nearly exposed my identity. Moments like these serve as a reminder that successful undercover investigations rely on far more than technical expertise. They require patience, discipline, preparation, and the ability to earn and maintain the trust of individuals who would not hesitate to exploit any sign of weakness.

Our conversation spans more than two decades of investigations, including my assignment to the U.S. Embassy in Tallinn, Estonia, where I worked on some of the most significant transnational cybercrime cases of the time. We discuss how cybercriminal organizations evolved from small, invitation-only communities into sophisticated global enterprises responsible for billions of dollars in fraud.

Understanding those human factors remains essential to building effective cyber defense strategies.
